Speaking Engagements and School Visits

Teaching Artist - Inspirational Speaker

TeMika Grooms is an artist, writer, and arts advocate inspired by the power of children’s books to influence change in society. Her work typically features action-filled and expressive characters.  Her most recent published works include Save the Crash-test Dummies, an engaging non-fiction book by Jennifer Swanson and Put Your Shoes on and Get Ready! by Senator Raphael G. Warnock.

TeMika is a graduate of Georgia Institute of Technology with a degree in Civil Engineering.  She spent many years designing structures, roadways, and utilities in the southeast. Now she uses her creativity to write and illustrate books for young readers.  She values STEAM education and enjoys inspiring the youth with her experiences as an engineer and an artist.

TeMika was selected as a 2021 We Need Diverse Books Illustration Mentee and a member of the 2021 Cohort for the Highlights Foundation and Brown Bookshelf Amplify Black Stories Program.

Typical Teaching Artist Fees (varies based on selected program and location):

Teaching Artist Sessions:
  • Group Storytelling: An interactive group workshop for students to collectively develop a story. This type of presentation can be tailored to the age of the audience.  It is interactive and fun!
  • My Journey into Illustration: A chat and slideshow about how I became an illustrator.
  • Using Math to Create Characters: Learn the basics of Character Design in illustration.
  • Using Math in Illustration: A workshop incorporating basic geometry and perspective for illustration development.
  • Yoga for Your Classroom: This is a fun, movement-based workshop that kids (of all ages) can do in their seats. We will go through a series of movements in or around their chair to get out the wiggles and create a sense of calm. Yoga is for everybody, anywhere! Click here to learn more.
  • Writing and Illustrating for Children's Book Publishing (workshop series): Learn the steps to write, illustrate, and publish your book through self-publishing or through traditional publishing houses.  This is a broad topic that I can break down into multiple sessions. This presentation series is most suitable for teens and adults interested in publishing books.
INTERESTED IN SCHOOL VISITS?
I love talking with students about books and art! I have done several presentations (virtual and in-person) to inspire audiences to unleash their own creativity.
